A very old Mimosa tree that caused a whole lot of problems eventually was taken down from the back left corner…. In comes Hilary with Landscape Design in a Day to give the front yard a second life.

Hilary included a little rain garden, some driveway access for the neighbors, and a mail person’s path…isn’t she so thoughtful!

Final phase done on this mostly established woodland garden (check out those ferns!).

Last year we did the front yard, then Dan came in and built some beautiful steps and a sweet circular seating area in the backyard, then they built that gorgeous Cedar fence….and THEN we got in there and finished it all up with a gardener’s footpath, a lot of plant improvements, simplified the lava rock a bit (client wanted to keep all of it 😳), and added some much needed drip irrigation. A few plants are missing still, but I don’t think you’ll notice since there’s so much to look at 😉

My client is a hard one to read, but a pat on the shoulder and a “it looks so good!” in a monotone voice is all I needed.

When you walk a project in October, then walk up to the same backyard in April, you’ve got two separate projects 😆

But we stuck with it, pulled out a few trees, a few honeysuckle monsters, and kept to the schedule 💪

We also found loads of toys- see the last picture with the world’s smallest shovel.
•
One day the client might update the lawn, but for now, this backyard is kid and Saint Bernard-ready!

My client waited a long time for this one day install.

I designed this small garden last summer and given the higher elevation and making sure to get every plant variety just right, she patiently waited till this week.

After giving me a big hug when we were all wrapped up, I’d say the wait was worth it.
•
Thanks to my crew for roughing it in the on-and-off downpours, the last minute supply runs, and the sets of stairs.

Small front yards don’t have to be boring.
•
No design + chill client = creative fun!
•
We swapped out the crumbling veggie beds for some new ones, added a rain garden for the nearby downspout, built a mini crevice garden for the hot slope, and reused some onsite materials for a fun new path. The neighborhood fairies liked the new garden so much they decided to stick around too 😉

I hope A+C have as much fun playing in their new garden as we did building it ❤️

We took out the contractor’s hog fuel, turned up the compacted soil, and amended with 3 yards of compost blend. Throw in a few Largo pavers from @western_interlock and a few dainty boulders, and it’s all ready for Kyle @ninebark_design to work her magic 🪄

Finally got to wrap up phase 2 of this project from last fall and it was just as much, ahem, fun! Removing an 8’ wide bed of river rock with landscape fabric is definitely a job for a dingo!

The area under the fir trees was dubbed the shi* area with piles of random rock and construction debris. I think they’ll name it something else now though 😍

When you think you have another week to prep, but some scheduling changes pushes you to bump it up a week, it’s an extra large feather in our collective cap.

It’s fun to have a vision and put it to real life without the help of a design or plan, though it can be a little stressful during the process, ha!

Plants include Choisya, Deer Fern, Geranium renardii, Fringecup, Beach Daisy, Columbine, Spirea, and Carex.

Lucky for us, we get to keep our eyes on this one with quarterly maintenance 🙌
